Little Sadie - Jerry Douglas Solo

*This is a recording & TAB of a live Zoom workshop from 1-7-24

Jerry Douglas's solo for Little Sadie from the Tony Rice Unit Manzanita album is one of my favorite all time solos on this record. It's structure provides a great template for creating your own solos. It's in the key of Em with the capo on the 2nd fret (played out of D position). Jerry incorporates some classic Dobro licks with the melody, but what makes this solo so intriguing to me is the variation in rhythm and texture. Closed position licks, rolls, hammer-on/pull-offs, and octaves all combined to make an expressive, singable, memorable break.

Lets not forget about the iconic decending octaves line that closes it out!

If you're looking for inspiration on how to take a simple melody and make it interesting, this is a great place to start. I'll share some ideas for practicing the syncopated rhythmic sections and some techniques for cleaning up unwanted buzzes/noise.

*Recordings of each class and TAB will be provided. You do not need to attend the sessions live to take this class. I'll send a link to download the recordings and TAB after each class. You can sign up after the scheduled date and I'll send you the recordings for any missed classes.
